Most of us are able to integrate all of the sensory information that we constantly face, paying attention to and tolerating important sensory information and disregarding information that is less relevant. For those with sensory difficulties, however, this is not the case. Many people have difficulties processing information taken in through the senses and small adjustments to their environment or to the way they are allowed to move at school can make a huge difference to how they manage their day to day lift. Besides the five senses of smell, taste, sight, hearing, and touch, individuals can also struggle with their sense of movement and balance.
We process information through our senses and decide on how to respond to the things we are experiencing. Sensory systems that absorb information about the world around us are:
Sight
Taste (gustatory)
Smell (olfactory)
Hearing (auditory)
Touch (tactile)
Proprioception (using our muscles to understand where our body is in space)
Vestibular (the sense of how the body moves against gravity)
